April Ship wine club will send out the week of April 7th. Thank you to all our national supports.

“In the Spring, I have counted 136 different kinds of weather inside of 24 hours.” – Mark Twain

Spring fever has hit Philomath, and the Compton family has all kinds of projects in motion at the winery, in the vineyards, and on our farm. Rain or shine, we get to work!

Matt is busy pruning our vineyards to remove old wood and direct the plant’s energy and nutrient uptake to the parts of the vine that will grow the best fruit. At this stage we see woody trunks crowned in moss with young green stems of grapevines shooting out, and even growing some new plant life reseeded from wind and birds. Eco-diversity in the vineyard is an important part of our regenerative farming program and we plant cover crops in the rows to help feed and protect the network of life in the soil. Our sheep, chickens, pigs and goats get to help “mow” by munching through the vineyard rows too. It’s too early to know what the 2025 growing season has in store, but Matt’s constant presence in our vineyards keeps him ahead of the curve and assures the best harvest possible.

Everyone loves the late winter arrival of new baby animals! The current tally of 2025 farm babies: 18 Katahdin lambs, 3 Alpine goat kids, and 1 young wild goose that has moved into the lower pond to get in on morning feedings with the ducks. Tabitha uses her best goose mom voice each morning to befriend this wayward goose and it no longer hisses at her. Speaking of birds, Tabitha has started selling her farm eggs by subscription. If you would like to get on the weekly schedule, please email tabitha@comptonwine.com . You can also reserve your Compton locker lamb if you live in the northwest (they sell out quickly) for Oct/Nov pick up. More Details Our lambs live a wonderful life on our farm and just have one bad day, really just a bad second. Support sustainable local agriculture and your favorite winery all at the same time.

Tabitha’s other farm-to-table passion project is Tallow by Tabitha. The Compton family has been using high quality grass-fed beef tallow as a superfood skincare product for many years (before it was cool) and now you can find it for sale in our Tasting Room. Tabitha sources the highest quality tallow from grass-fed cows and renders it four times to produce a pure product with a smooth texture and light essential oils of calendula and apricot. We use tallow balm daily for moisturizing the face, lips, hands and body. Anti-inflammatory properties help to calm redness, acne, and other skin irritations. Ask Tabitha about pre-orders for her next batch!

Thank you for choosing to support small family-owned businesses like ours with your hard-earned dollars. Nationally, wine sales are down and the cost of all goods keeps rising. We’re all feeling it. Connecting directly with you, our wine club family, to share our small-lot Oregon wines is more important than ever. Please spread the good word about our wines and share them with your circles. Bring in friends to enjoy complimentary club tastings at the winery. We are planning exciting new wine events and experiences to share with you in 2025. The Comptons have been producing beautiful terroir driven wines in Philomath for over 22 years and we have no plans to slow down. Thank you for being a very important part of our business and our family story.

Cheers to spring! Matt and Tabitha Compton

THE WINES

Ramato, Newton Creek Vineyard, 2023 NEW 90 rating
Our new vintage of Ramato is 100% Pinot Gris grown at Newton Creek Vineyard, located a few miles north of our winery in Philomath. The name “Ramato” comes from Northeastern Italy where Pinot Grigio (aka Pinot Gris) is made into a lovely copper hued wine. We start by fermenting whole clusters of Pinot Gris to let the pigments and flavors from skins and seeds permeate into the flesh of the grape. The wine is pressed and then aged in neutral oak barrels. To best enjoy this balance of subtle sweetness and savory earthiness, we recommend serving Ramato at room/cellar temperature

Pinot Gris, 2023 92 rating
Varietal purity is on display here, offering classic Pinot Gris flavors with hints of citrus. pear, peach, and a touch of almond – this one is something special. The warm summer of 2023 rewarded us with outstanding fruit quality and higher-than-expected yields at harvest time.

Pinot Blanc, 2022 91 rating
Tabitha’s favorite! Estate Pinot Blanc vines were planted in 1997 at our Compton Family Farms Vineyard in Philomath, Oregon. This Southeast facing vineyard is lower elevation and benefits from the rich soil series of the Willamette Valley. The cooler micro-climate here allows us to pick our Pinot Blanc later in the season when the flavors are full and expressive. Hot tip: let the wine warm a bit in your glass to enjoy enfolding lush notes of pear.

Compton Sparkling Brut, 2019 90 rating
There’s no need to wait for a special occasion to enjoy our elegant Brut. Sparkling goes with everything! Compton Brut is made with old vine Pinot Noir from Mary’s Peak Vineyard and old vine 108 clone Chardonnay from Hoot & Howl Vineyard in Philomath, Oregon, in the traditional method of sparkling wine making: a slow, elegant transformation from still wine to sparkling, all occurring inside the bottle.

Cellar Select Pinot Noir, 2023 NEW
Our Cellar Select label appears when we have a wine that stands apart from the norm. We aged this 2023 vintage Pinot Noir in neutral oak barrels for 2 months (no new oak!) then moved to our concrete egg for an additional 8 months of aging, to make a unique PInot Noir that’s all about mouthwatering bright red fruit.

Alpine Cuvee Pinot Noir, 2021 NEW 91 rating
A blend of old-vine pinot noir from two dry-farmed vineyards in Alpine, Oregon: Woodhall III Vineyard, planted in 1976, and Bovine Vineyard, planted in 2008. Soils are Basalt and Red Jory series volcanic soils that typically show redder fruit aromas and flavors and elegant tannins.  Alpine Cuvée Pinot Noir is aged 18 months in French oak barrels before blending and bottling.

Llewellyn Cuvée Pinot Noir, 2021 NEW 91 rating
Enjoy our blend of old-vine Pommard, Wädenswil and Dijon 115 pinot noir from three dry-farmed vineyards off of Llewellyn Road south of Corvallis/Philomath: Compton Family, Hoot & Howl, and Mary’s Peak Vineyard. These vineyards have alluvial and marine sedimentary soils which grow Pinot Noir that exhibits voluptuous and denser dark red berry and blue/black fruit with darker floral earth tones and bigger, heavier tannins.

Mary’s Peak Vineyard Pinot Noir, 2021 NEW 92 rating
We reserve this special small-lot wine for our wine club members and in the Tasting Room. Mary’s Peak Vineyard was planted between 1977 and 1980 to the Wädenswil clone of Pinot Noir. Situated on East-facing slopes of alluvial, sedimentary loam soil, and in the rain shadow of the highest mountain in the Oregon Coast range, Marys Peak, this dry-farmed vineyard consistently grows top quality Pinot Noir.

BoVine Vineyard Pinot Noir, 2021 and 2022 90 rating
Matt Compton planted BoVine Vineyard with Pommard, Wadenswil and 667 clones of Pinot Noir in Alpine, Oregon back in 2008. The land was formerly cow pasture and we appreciate their contributions to the soil. BoVine is another special Pinot Noir reserved for club members first. Cheers to moo!
